5 weeks 2 days

Well, 6 days ago I started sort of spotting and it's looking very similar to the last time when it finally ended in AF/ miscarriage, soooooo, I'm not feeling too optimistic about this one now. :(  I've also been having more AF type cramping, which feels like AF is just about ready to begin with full on cramping, but the cramps haven't gotten worse . . . yet, so I'm still HOPING that this little one sticks.

On a positive note, if it can be regarded as one, last time I began spotting since 4dpo already!  This time it only began at 18dpo, so I'm hoping that it means something and will be different from last time.  Also, my temps are still high and haven't dropped yet at all . . . however last time my temp didn't drop until 2 days after AF / miscarriage started, so I'm not sure how much value to place on temps at this point, in the sense of whether it'll drop a day or so before AF is about to come (like it always does with normal AF).

Oh, and another difference from last time is that from 19dpo I started having partial and full ferning on my ovulation microscope (indicating estrogen surge) which lasted until 24 dpo, the day before AF began.  At the mo I'm on at 23dpo and have had basically NO ferning at ALL, except for one day or so where there was the tiniest bit of ferning on one edge.  So I'm hoping this is a positive difference as well!  I'm grabbing at straws here, hehe.

Every time my cramps subside I feel a little more positive, like maybe this spotting will go away and things will go well from there on, but when they return again then I'm discouraged allll over again, ISH.

So yesterday I decided to get some bed rest and stayed in bed for most of the day, and I think today I'm gonna take it easy too - I think I can take my pc to bed and I'm gonna work from there, sounds like a good plan. :)

Storing Breast Milk

Sometimes it's convenient to store expressed milk for later use, so here's what I've read to be safe ways of doing so:

Remember that once baby starts feeding from a bottle, it should be used with an hour, and if baby doesn't finish the milk it can be kept in the fridge for the very next feeding (up to 2 hours later), after which it must be discarded, because bacteria could be transferred to the milk through baby's feeding from the bottle.

And remember to label any stored milk so that you know how long it's been in the fridge or freezer.

Room temp
Expressed milk can be kept at room temp for a max of about 4 hours to be on the safe side, after which is must either be used or discarded.

Cool box
In a cool box with ice packs, milk can be stored for up to 24 hours.

Refrigerated milk
If you're going to refrigerate milk, do so as soon as possible after expressing it.  I've read different sources that say milk can be kept in the fridge for about 3, 5 or up to 8 days, so I'm going to go with 5 days to be on the safe side.  The fridge temp should be 4 degrees C or cooler.

Warm the milk by running warm water over the container of milk, and use within 24 hours and thereafter discard if there is still milk left after feeding.

Frozen milk
Milk can be frozen for about 3 months (some even say up to 6 months) . . . but why would one wanna freeze it for that long anyway?!  This is only suitable for a real freezer that cools keeps food cool to -18 degrees C or colder.  Freeze the milk as soon as possible after expressing.

When filling a bottle with milk, leave about an inch of empty space in the bottle to leave some space for the frozen milk to expand (because frozen liquids expand).

The milk should be defrosted in the fridge (it takes about 24 hours, so do this well ahead of time!), or otherwise defrost it by running warm water over the container of milk until it's at room temp, or place it in a large container filled with warm water and as the water cools, replace with warm water again until the milk is defrosted.  Use immediately (or can be stored in fridge for another 24 hours) and thereafter discard if there's still milk left after feeding.  Never re-freeze thawed milk and never microwave the milk (whether it's for heating up or defrosting) or heat it up on the stove, and definitely never boil it.

Don't freeze milk as a regular thing, since freezing it destroys some of the immune properties of the milk, so refrigerating it is actually better.  And of course fresh milk is the best.

Storage containers
It's said that the best way to store milk is in sterilized glass or hard clear plastic containers with a tight sealing lid.

Changes in milk appearance
Refrigerating or freezing milk may change the way it looks.  Apparently the milk may appear slightly blueish, yellowish or brownish.  It may also separate in that the cream will rise to the top, so just swirl it around until it's mixed again before feeding it to baby.

How much to store
Store milk in small amounts as opposed to putting too much in a container and then baby can't finish it - this helps to prevent milk from being wasted.  You can always begin adding more milk if you see baby starts drinking more.

Dresser Drawers

I wanna get one of these for baby's room, and double it up as a changing station (must just find one that's deep/wide enough to accommodate baby's changing mat).
We have one of these in our bedroom so I first thought, in the spirit of saving some money, that we'd use that one for baby and try and squish our clothes in somewhere else in our cupboards, hehe.  But these aren't expensive so we'll just get baby their own one.
Plus this will still be suitable for baby's room no matter how old baby is - it'll always be useful.

Man, I wanna start shopping!!!! But will wait a little while longer first.  :)

Stroller with Car Seat

I think I've found a stroller that I want. :D  Plus it's convenient 'cause it's situated somewhere where we go often enough, so we can just go collect it instead of spending more money on postage fees.  I hope they have in stock by the time we want to buy it!
Stroller features: one hand fold (dunno how that works but it sounds convenient!), multi-position back rest, child and parent tray (so that I can also have place to put my snacks, haha), 5 point safety harness & shopping basket which I suppose could be handy for storing stuff.  And an included car seat.

Baby's Size Week by Week

But first, something confusing . . .

Calculating which week of pregnancy you are in is a weird thing.  One doesn't begin counting from the day you ovulate (which would make sense and would give the true age of baby), but from the first day of your last period.
The problem with this calculation is that it's usually based on a 28 day cycle which consists of 14 days from CD 1 to day of ovulation, and 14 days from day of O to day before your next period begins.  This usually means that if your cycles aren't exactly 28 days long, the medical way of determining your week of pregnancy is always inaccurate.
Eg, like me - the first part of my cycle is 21 days long and the second part after O is about 13 or so.  So by the time I'm already a week late for AF, baby is actually 6 weeks old (if I count from the first day of my last period), but the doctors will tell me that I'm only 5 weeks along (which is what happened with my last pregnancy), BUT baby is actually only 3 weeks old.  Told you is was confusing. :P
It's just silly IMO.  So I'm calculating my baby's age from the day of ovulation when conception occurred (so the "medical" age will always be 2 weeks more). This also means that baby's gestation is actually only about 38 weeks, and not really 40 weeks, because the first 2 weeks baby didn't even exist yet.

So baby's age is generally calculated from week 3 (which is actually week of conception), which means that at week 4 it actually means that baby is only 2 weeks old.  So here goes . . . !

Week 3  (1st trimester)
Day of egg fertilization.  Baby is about the size of a grain of salt and is too small to weigh.
Week 4
Baby is about the size of a poppy seed and still to small to weigh.
Week 5
Baby is about the size of a sesame seed and weighs less than 1 gram.
Week 6
Baby is about the size of a lentil and still weighs less than 1 gram.

Week 13  (2nd trimester)
Size: nectarine (7.4cm) Weight: 23 grams.
Week 14
Size: lemon (8.7cm) Weight: 43 grams.
Week 15
Size: apple (10.1cm) Weighs about 70 grams.
Week 16
Size: small avocado (11.6cm) Weight: 100 grams. (ooh, weighs as much as a slab of chocolate)
Week 17
Size: turnip (13cm) Weight: 140 grams.

Size: green pepper (14.2cm) Weight: 190 grams.

Week 25
Length: long eggplant (34.6cm crown to heel) Weight: 660 grams.
Week 26
Length: average cucumber (35.6cm crown to heel) Weight: 760 grams.

4 Weeks 4 Days

Today I had some slight AF-type cramping and some spotting.  :S  Well, slightly light brown-tinged CF.  I got a little worried about the spotting (not so much about the cramping because that's normal during early pg) until I read comments from others on CountdownMyPregnancy.com (which is where I'm recording my pregnancy!) that spotting, even accompanied by cramps, is quite common and normal . . . as long as the spotting isn't red and the cramps aren't sharp and painful . . . whew!

So I'm hoping the spotting goes away so that I don't have to keep wondering if it's gonna get worse or not.  And this crampiness is annoying - it sort of makes me feel almost irritable (because it feels like AF is beginning and the accompanying cramps annoy me, haha).

Cute Cute Cute Baby Dress

How cute is THIS????!!!!  And it's suitable from birth to one year (well, this size anyway).  And it's even got a CUTE little baggie (for the pacifier I assume).  Sooooo cute!!! :D  At R285 (or R120 on special, but not sure for how long!) I'm not sure whether I'll be "permitted" to buy this one, haha.  But I'm gonna try!  :)

17 dpo - Day After Getting + HPT

I'm still continuing to temp just to see where it goes, and today my temp dipped a little again, so I hope it's nothing to be concerned about.
The last bit of my chart
It's still early days, so I'm hoping for the best and that the little bean sticks! :D

All sticky dust donations accepted!!!  :o)

I bought 2 hpt's yesterday, but as it turned out I only needed one.  So I'll give it a few days and then take the other one just to see what happens.

Wednesday 18 April 2012

It's Happened!!!!!!!!!

'Nuff said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Taken at 16 dpo.  DeeDee had to get in on the pic, hehe.

16 dpo (cycle 13 of ttc)

My excitement has been in overdrive since yesterday. . . . I'm almost sure this is it!!!!

Today my temp is STILL high, no dips yet as in before AF.  I'm on CD 37 today, so far since I've been ttc, my longest cycle has been CD 36.  So this is really good news . . . no spotting yet, no temp dipping yet indicating that AF is on the way right now, PLUS I've been having AF-like cramps since 3 days ago, on and off, many times a day, and I've never had cramps on this scale before, before AF arrives.
I wasn't planning on going out until Friday to buy a test (if AF hadn't shown up by then), but Noob Dad is going out today for an appointment, I think I'm gonna tag along and ask that we stop by the pharmacy on the way quick so that I can get an hpt!  I'm testing today!!!!

I have this nervous feeling inside in my chest, almost like I'm about to go write an important exam, or do something really nerve-wracking like doing speech in class when I was still in school (my absolute worst school experience, lol).

Baby dust to meeeeeeee!!!!! :D

15 dpo (cycle 13 of ttc)

Still no spotting!!!  :D  I really shouldn't be getting this excited since I could have my O day a little wrong (I wish I could have some expert second opinions!) . . . but if I'm really 15 dpo and still no spotting at all, hopefully it means good news!  :D

Yesterday I was a little disappointed 'cause my temp dropped, which is a sure sign that AF is coming the next day or so . . . but this morning my temp raised again! Yay!!  :D
See the last raised temp for today??  :D  I really really really hope this is it . . . but I'm a bit worried that I'm setting myself up for a HUGE ass disappointment by getting excited too soon.

So I'm T-R-Y-I-N-G to wait patiently to see if AF arrives in the next few days - if it's not here by Friday then I'm testing!  OMG, what a fun present this will be for my b'day in 2 weeks' time!!! :D

Baby dust and stick vibes to MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!  :D

P.S. all friendly baby dust and sticky vibe donations welcome!!  ;)

Baby Brush Set

Something cute for baby . . . but mainly for mum's amusement and to add some extra cute-factor to the nursery. :)
The mirror is on the underside of the bunny.  Ain't this cute? :D

(item can be ordered from Calora, in my side bar --->)

14 dpo (cycle 13 of ttc)

So today is 14 dpo and no AF yet, absolutely no spotting (which for the last I don't know how long, I've always been getting a few days of spotting before AF comes), but have had sore boobs for the last 4 days, and having slight crampiness a few times a day today and yesterday, which are all normal PMS things for me, meaning AF is probably on the way any day (or hour) now.

On the up side, I'm on 14 dpo today!!  :D  Which means my LP has increased to normal length! :)  Normal average healthy LP is about 14 days.  Yippeeeee! :D

HOWEVER, I hope I got my O day correct....here's my chart up until today:
Click on it to enlarge it if you can't see
I had a +opk and O pains on CD 21 which is where I put the red dotted line.  So counting from there, it puts me at 14 dpo today.  Let's hope it was correct.  But surely a +opk and O pains on the same day means that the egg is being released??  We bd's on CD21 and 22, so hopefully we covered our bases there.

Even though the PMS things I'm having now are also common pregnancy signs, I can't help but feel that I'm out this month again, 'cause it just feels TOO much the same as every other month's PMS with no other definitive pregnancy symptoms either.  But until AF comes I'm still hopeful. :D

Also, I got really excited yesterday when my temp had a big spike (CD34), and I was hoping that would be the beginning of a tri-phasic chart, but alas, today's temp has disappointed me again.  A big drop like that is also a good (or bad) sign that AF is on the way.

Fun Ways To Announce Your Pregnancy

Since none of our family know that we're ttc, there's NO WAY that when it finally happens, we're just gonna tell them in a boring old way.  So here are some cute and fun ways to announce your pregnancy!  :D

Sonogram gift
Make copies of your sonogram and wrap it up in a cute little gift box.  Give it to them next time you see them.

Printed T-shirts
Have the announcement printed on a t-shirt and wear it next time you see them,eg:
  • "bun in the oven"
  • one for you saying "mum to be" and one for your husband "dad to be"
  • "coming in May" with a pic of a baby underneath (use whatever month your baby will be due)
  • "brand new mum"  & "brand new dad" with an "established in 2012" beneath it (use whatever year baby was made)
  • "mum in training" & "dad in training"
  • "(your surname) in the making", with an arrow pointing to your belly below
  • "baby under construction, check back in May" (use whatever month baby is due), or use a cute baby pic with "under construction" beneath it
  • print a pic of a "baby on board" sign on the shirt
  • "look what I got" with an arrow pointing toward your belly, and a pic of a bun in an oven where your belly is
  • at the top of your shirt print "(egg pic) + (cute spermie) =" , with an arrow pointing down toward your belly and "baby (your surname)" printed where your belly is
  • print a cute pic like the one below . . . hehehe!

Bun in the oven
Bake some muffins, wrap up a single muffin for everybody and tie with a tag saying "we have a bun in the oven".  (wrap the muffin in clear wrapping paper / cellophane, otherwise the whole purpose of the muffin will be lost)

Pink & blue cupcakes
This is a cute idea if you're telling a group of people, like the whole family at the same time or making an announcement at your office.  Bake some cupcakes and ice half with pink and half with blue icing, and put a + on each of them.  Wait for them to click. :)

Photo frame
Get a 3-photo frame, place a photo of you in the first photo, your husband in the second and a photo of your + pregnancy test or a copy of your sonogram in the 3rd one.  Display it in a prominent place when you're having guests and wait for it to be noticed, or wrap it as a gift.  Or just frame the sonogram and gift that.

Say it on a plate
Invite everybody over for dinner.  Have some plates or dessert bowls painted with a message on the bottom (eg "we're pregnant!" or "baby (your surname) on the way" etc).  Make sure you dish up their food or dessert, then wait until they finish their food and see the message at the bottom.

Get the doggy in on it
Print a shirt for doggy to wear, saying something like "I'm not the only baby anymore" or "I'm getting another sister or brother" and wait for someone to notice it.

Update - aaaaaaand . . .THIS is how we made our announcements! :)

Mosquito Dome

Hehe, this is cute, and I think perfect for if you're out with baby visiting friends on a warm mosquito-filled summer night.  Or if you're into pic-nicks, this would be perfect too!  We probably won't end up getting one ('cause let's face it, it ain't a necessity!), but it'd be a fun goodie to have, just in case it may be needed . . . :)
If you're gonna be out with baby relaxing somewhere often, I think it would be worth it.  It's suitable to about 12 months of age.  This would keep them out of trouble as well, since they can't sneak off anywhere if you just want to do something else and take attention off of baby for a few seconds (I'm not sure when babies actually begin crawling around?!).
(this item can be ordered from Calora, in my side bar --->)

12 dpo (cycle 13 of ttc)

Today is 12 dpo and it feels like every other month so far.  Nothing.  *sniff*

And last night my boobs started feeling a little tender again . . . the usual for a couple of days before AF comes.  Since this is my 3rd cycle of taking vit B6 (and I upped my dose of B6 for this cycle from about 35mg to 85mg), I'm curious to see how long my LP will be this time.  No spotting yet either, so, so far so good. :D

I hope I got my O date right though:
The second last row shows my OPK results - I had a clear positive on CD21, along with O twinges, so I think that's the day O happened (the red line).  The program marked my possible O date 3 days later though (blue line), but I think the only reason it did that was because it was going only by my sharp temp rise the next day (since one's temp increases  noticeably after O).  I'm working from the red line, which puts me at 12 dpo, and the blue line puts me at only 9 dpo, but I don't think the blue line is accurate, based on my OPK results.

Anyhoo, if I were to be pregnant now, apparently it's normal to have no symptoms until a while after AF's due date has come and gone, so I'm still in the game.  :)  Luckily I'm not a POAS addict (pee on a stick addict - referring to someone who takes like a ton of hpt's every cycle just for sake of testing to see if they're actually pregnant or not), so I can easily wait to see if AF is late before I go out buying hpt's.  ;)
